Conditional Relational Reasoning

چکیده
Conditional reasoning reasoning with ”if” is very common in everyday life. Consequently, all reasoning theories provide explanations for typical logical errors in conditional reasoning. The combination of conditional reasoning with spatial relational reasoning provides a new test-bed for these theories. Take, for instance, the two assertions ”If the church is to the left of the cinema then the cinema is to the left of the library” and ”The church is to the right of the library”. Can both assertion be true at the same time? The second statement links a term from the antecedent to the consequence. Such novel tasks pose significant problems for the reasoner, and extensions of classical theories differ in their empirical predictions. We report two behavioral experiments investigating conditional relational reasoning and provide support for predictions of the mental model theory.

Recomposing a fragmented literature: How conditional and relational arguments engage different neural systems for deductive reasoning
Deductive reasoning is traditionally viewed as a unitary process involving either rule-based or visuo-spatial mechanisms. However, there is a disagreement in the neuroimaging literature on whether the data support one alternative over the other. Here we test the hypothesis that discrepancies in the literature result from the reasoning materials themselves. Using functional magnetic resonance im...
متن کاملRepresenting Statistical Information and Degrees of Belief in First-Order Probabilistic Conditional Logic
Employing maximum entropy methods on probabilistic conditional logic has proven to be a useful approach for commonsense reasoning. Yet, the expressive power of this logic and similar formalisms is limited due to their foundations on propositional logic and in the past few years a lot of proposals have been made for probabilistic reasoning in relational settings. Most of these proposals rely on ...
متن کاملRelational Probabilistic Conditional Reasoning at Maximum Entropy
This paper presents and compares approaches for reasoning with relational probabilistic conditionals, i. e. probabilistic conditionals in a restricted first-order environment. It is well-known that conditionals play a crucial role for default reasoning, however, most formalisms are based on propositional conditionals, which restricts their expressivity. The formalisms discussed in this paper ar...

A considerable amount of studies have been established on conditional reasoning supporting mental model theory of propositional reasoning. Mental model theory proposed by Johnson- larid and Byrne is an explanation of someone's thought process about how something occurs in the real world. Conditional reasoning as a kind of reasoning is the way to speak about possibilities or probabilities. The a...
متن کاملOn probabilistic inference in relational conditional logics
The principle of maximum entropy has proven to be a powerful approach for commonsense reasoning in probabilistic conditional logics on propositional languages. Due to this principle, reasoning is performed based on the unique model of a knowledge base that has maximum entropy. This kind of model-based inference fulfills many desirable properties for inductive inference mechanisms and is usually...
